2 – The Collective

The Computer Designed For Deep Thought
“I speak of none but the computer that is to come after me. A computer whose merest operational parameters I am not worthy to calculate! Yet I will design it for you! A computer which can calculate the Answer to the Ultimate Question, A computer of such infinite and subtle complexity that organic life itself shall form part of its operational matrix. You yourselves shall take on new forms and go down into the computer to navigate its 10-million-year program! Yes, I shall design this computer for you, and I shall name it also unto you. And it shall be called the EARTH!”
The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy   Douglas Adams.

We are all unique, individual beings living our lives, but we only use about 5% to 20% (depending on the complexity of our culture) of our brains total computing ability. The rest is contributed to the collective computer using techniques similar to Beowulf cluster computing used by the IT crowd.
This shared intelligence, which runs on normal human intelligence rather than some sort of artificial intelligence, is there as our servant, to solve problems beyond the ability of a single person to handle.

Some examples of how this works.

Farmers in a dozen countries are experiencing a mouse plague. As each individual farmer ponders what to do their minds link subconsciously and form a virtual “super farmer” who not only has access to each of the farmers knowledge but to all other human knowledge that may be of use in fighting mouse plagues. This “super farmer” then processes the data and comes up with options on fighting the plague. Each farmer then receives a tailor-made plan matching their skills and the facilities available to them. Each tests their plan and the results update our collective knowledge for future needs. No wonder the ancients believed in Gods!

Each workplace develops a cluster containing the collected thoughts and observations of all of the employees, which will contain details of every problem and opportunity the business faces, and the solutions for dealing with them. A constantly running SWOT exercise. The first managers that learn how to read these clusters will develop highly successful businesses.

Don’t tell the education system, but it also contains the answers to every exam ever written. It is particularly effective with multi choice exams which possibly explains the Flynn effect in IQ testing.

Like all computers it is affected by viruses. The viruses both shut off access to the computer, and consume processing time, but it still keeps on working.

The Main functions of the collective mind are:

Common Sense – The Computer Designed for Deep Thought as described above.

The System of Natural Justice – the arbiter of “free” will. Our system of natural justice. The constant balancing of individual and collective will which also generates the collective conscience if the system goes out of balance.

The Babel Box. Our system of interpersonal communication. Our brains all “think” in the same language.

The MPIB – Mental Personal Indicating Beacon. Our ability to send out a distress signal when we get into a difficult situation, identifying who and where we are and the nature of our emergency.
